Tireless hiker

Tireless hiker
Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 24, 2009
Size: ~ 3 mm
Found this relatively large and distinctly colored Mite, with a red kite on its back, cruising across the rocky desert, which turned out to be a sandy hiking trail.

Even though it looks velvety, it appears to have a closer resemblance to the Erythraeidae family.

I hope the long, trailing hind legs and the distinctive coloration will help with identification.

I'd love to find out who this is, or at least to which family it belongs.

Moved to Erythraeidae
Ray Fisher and Dr. Protor confirm that this is an Erythraeid Mite.
Ray's best guess is that it belongs in genus Erythraeus.
