Moth - Catocala maestosa

Moth - Catocala maestosa
Azle, Parker County, Texas, USA
August 9, 2009
Size: 2" approx.
A few of these moths were flying around a group of pecan trees. If I hadn't seen this guy land with my camera around my neck I never would have found him. Even though he landed in front of me he blended perfectly with the tree bark. Can you identify what type of moth this is? Photo taken with 100mm macro lens.

Wonderful photo Annette.. capturing the camo coloration!

Thank you...
Thank you for the compliment. I am a true amateur with a lovely new camera my husband purchased for me. A Canon T1i. This was with my 100mm macro lens. I have had the camera 2 weeks and am a macro-atic! He got me the 70-300mm macro and the MP=E 65mm (can't wait to nab something with that one!).

One of the few Catocala that are relatively
straightforward with an overall light color and that huge black line across the wings. We would suggest C. maesosa, in the guide here. Did you get an opportunity to see if the underwings were black? The Info page has a link to the similar but darker C. vidua.

Underwing
Actually, when I first noticed this guy I thought I was going to find a black moth. I believe the underside of the wings were black.

yes, Catocala maestosa
The similar C. vidua has a black streak running parallel to inner margin from the wing base.
