Lady beetle larvae at egg hatch - Day 1 - Coleomegilla maculata

Lady beetle larvae at egg hatch - Day 1 - Coleomegilla maculata
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 15, 2009
Size: ~1 mm
First instar. C. maculata larvae are distinctive at egg hatch, with a deep brown color and orange markings on the thorax and abdomen.

I found these after they hatched, so there's no egg picture to start the life cycle series. The photo linked below shows a different C. maculata egg mass.

Plant: Daylily (Hemerocallis sp.). Many C. maculata adults visited the lily patch, where they fed on the abundant pollen as well as on insects.

I
am particularly fond of these and Cycloneda munda.

these are my favorite larvae!
Only on BugGuide can I say something like that and not get really weird looks :-) I love the colors orange and brown together, my entire fall wardrobe looks like that. It was always nice to see these native lady beetles, thriving in the midst of the city with all the introduced species around them.

I haven't seen C_ycloneda larvae in the city, I'll be looking for them in the parks and suburbs next year!

You
are among friends here, hehe!

I tend to find many adult Cycloneda munda searching on Artemisia vulgaris [=AKA Mugwort].

Perhaps you can look there if you know of any growing nearby?

Happy Blizzard 2009! [I'm enjoying our 20 or so inches of snow down I-95 from you in Baltimore City!]
