Lady beetle larva with prey - Day 2 - Coleomegilla maculata Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA Size: 1.1-2.1 mm
First instar. The larva visibly increased in size as it ate, which is why it's pale and strained-looking.
The orange specks are daylily pollen - C. maculata adults eat pollen, and I wanted to see if the larvae did too. However, by the next day the abrasive pollen had killed the soft-bodied aphids, and I didn't continue the experiment.
Prey: Aphid, Capitophorus hippophaes
Plant: Smartweed (Polygonum sp.), the foodplant of C. hippophaes
