Yes, MPG uses square formated images, but when posting on BugGuide please follow BugGuide standards. And I take it that this is not what Bob had in mind when he requested square "cropping", not filled out to a fake square format (that could have done by anyone with the rectangle image).

Thanks for asking about signing and full-frame. Please don't take my admittedly passionate opinion personally. I abhor both. Signatures or watermarks ruin photographs. I am willing to bet that not 1:10,000 photos posted at BugGuide (or MPG) has ever been used wrongly. Copyright notice is given with all photos at both places.

Full-frame photos limit options for tasteful use. Unless you are specializing in 11x14 or larger prints you will probably never use more than half frame. It is difficult for me to conceive of uses for typical moth photos that exceed the maximum 560x560 for display here. No book publisher would need photos even that large.

Square photos are not needed/required at BugGuide. Yet the best moth photographers adopt 560x560 as standard, or 560x420 (4:3) for moths with wings spread open. They do this only to collaborate with MPG. It is a very workable system.
