Rustic Sphinx - Manduca rustica

Rustic Sphinx - Manduca rustica
Mission, Hildago County, Texas, USA
October 22, 2004

Tom, what do you think about
Rustic Sphinx - Manduca rustica, Wagner page 249, granulated horn and golden mane. Any chance you know what plant it was on? Here's an image from Arizona. Maybe Alan Chin-Lee will comment if he's out there.

Rustic Sphinx
The horn and the golden mane do match, and I didn't see any others in the book with those features. It looks like a picture already in the guide, but the stripes don't look as dark, maybe because of the exposure. Not sure what plant it was on, only that it was on a vine like plant in a hedgerow.

Looks like it could be Bignonia,
which is a known host. See Bignonia capreolata for instance, which is native to Texas.

Thanks for the plant info, Hannah. It looks like it was a Bignonia plant.
