Unidentified Insect 33 - Synchlora aerata
Vineland, Cumberland County, New Jersey, USA
August 15, 2009
Size: 3/4 inch or so
It was on Joe-pye Weed flowers. First, I thought some caterpillar with flower petals on it but it looks like the flowers attached to its body as a comouflage. Is this Wavy-lined emerald moth caterpillar?

Ooo..pretty! I'll show you mine...
I'm so very pleased to see your posting. I've been wondering if I would ever get an ID on this caterpillar! Your posting helped me to give an educated guess about mine. Yours is prettier! Here's the reference to mine: http://bugguide.net/node/view/325976/bgimage.

I've got videos of one of these very caterpillars (I think) that had used the flowers of my thyme to adorn its body with a camouflage coat.

Synchlora sp
it has covered itself with flower petals as a disguise. it somtimes doesn't work though- occasionally hunting lasps will catch them
