Common whitetail -
Plathemis lydia
-
San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, USA
July 18, 2009
After looking this up, I think it's a 12-spotted skimmer, but since I'm still new, I wanted confirmation (or correction). Thanks

female Common whitetail
male 12-spotted has blue in the wings between the black spots and different abdominal marks. Female 12-spotted has different markings along the abdomen. Third look-alike is Prince baskettail, once again there are differences in body markings. Dessert whitetail also similar but outer wing spot location different.

Female Common whitetail
Thanks! I will look up each of these and study the differences. So much to learn! So much harder to me than birds. Perhaps I could use a suggestion for a good guide - other than using the internet for looking these up.
