Green spider - Araneus cingulatus

Green spider - Araneus cingulatus
In shrubbery of residential lawn under red oaks, Cedar St, Ashland, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
August 2, 2009
Size: Estimate 1/4 inch
This spider was in a bush, trying to look like a berry or bud. It let itself down on a line from my glove to the mulch and stayed still, scrunching up more and more if I disturbed it. Sometimes pedipalps showed. There seem to be 6 eyes in a pattern of 4 over 2. Long black bristles show on the middle of the legs, and the forelegs are brown rather than green. Spotted abdomen with white hairs and 2 rows of 5 tiny red spots.

We're not sure at present
how many of the green Araneus look like this. It may be Araneus cingulatus, in the guide here, but we'll move them temporarily to a page for unknown green Araneus. Nice find!

Araneus cingulatus
Thanks. This one sure looks like the Araneus cingulatus id'd by Bradley at Ohio State, with the Harlequin mask not as strong as in allie's [Photo#29783] My spider's attempt to look unspider-shaped was endearing.
