Trees around the house

How far from my porch light should I widen my circle of sylvan knowledge? How wide of a circle of trees should I learn? 100 meters? 400 meters? 1600 meters?

dunno - how far can they fly? probably a mile or so; but don't bother if there isn't a tree in sight from the place you took the photo.
