Lady beetle larva with prey - Day 5 - Coleomegilla maculata

Lady beetle larva with prey - Day 5 - Coleomegilla maculata
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 19, 2009
Size: 4.2 mm
Third instar. The orange pattern is well-defined, especially the semicircles on the first segment of the thorax. This is a key field mark for the species.

Prey: Aphid - I don't know what kind. (Not the same as the aphids on Polygonum.)

Plant: Sow thistle (Sonchus sp.), my secondary source of aphids in late July.
