Lady beetle larva - prepupa - Day 11/12 - Coleomegilla maculata

Lady beetle larva - prepupa - Day 11/12 - Coleomegilla maculata
Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA

Size: 6.5 mm, ~1/4 inch
"Prepupa" is not a separate larval instar, but is an identifiable stage lasting up to 24 hours. The larva attaches its rear abdominal segments to a leaf, which will anchor it as a pupa, and the body becomes stiff and curved. It is motionless unless strongly provoked, and may appear dead.

This prepupal larva was very strongly provoked (another larva tried to eat it) and became active again, although its body remained in the stiff curve. It detached itself from the leaf, awkwardly ran away from its attacker, and hid in a curled-up leaf. I moved it to a separate container, where it formed a prepupa again on Day 12.

Such a great series!
And it was lucky to have you as its watcher and protector. =)

Thanks! Yes, I made sure none
Thanks! Yes, I made sure none of my larvae ate each other (even the huge batch of multicolored Asian, some of whom tried!). It may have interfered w/ nature taking its course, but heck, I was taking care of them so it was my course :-)

Exactly -
and all my current caterpillars may have starved and died, had I left them on my door!
