"Large Dusk Calling/Singing Cicada" - Megatibicen grossus
Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey, USA
August 7, 2009
Size: 1.5 in long
I believe this is a Cicada

Moved
Moved from Tibicen.

This appears to be Tibicen auletes
I have searched for this species for 3 years and finally found one in Lakewood, which is in the same county of New Jersey as Toms River. The specimen I have looks exactly like the one pictured. Key elements are the light grayish eyes and the heavy pruinosity which extends all over the dorsal surface of this species. Some are so covered with pruinosity, they seem like they were dipped in confectionaries's sugar!

T. auletes
Good to hear you agree.
These are spectacular in size and pruinosity...and CONGRAT's on your first find!

To my knowledge, there is no other NA species so covered in wax!

Compare this image to Tibicen auletes
Pale greyish-tan eyes
High degree of pruinosity (powdered or frosted appearance)

Neither are traits seen in T. linnei, but are very typical of T. auletes.

------------

Regarding node position and wing shape, these characters have been proven to be unreliable across the ranges for several species (incl. linnei, pruinosus and canicularis). Additionally, without a good lateral perspective or spread specimen, it is not possible to apply linear analysis on a 3-D object in a 2-D field/image due to "lensing" and distortion.

Tibicen linnei
The wing edge is almost straight beyond the midlength.

yes, cicada
I'm not sure which one though. I'll leave it to the cicada experts. There are quite of few of them out singing this time of year.
