Formica exsectoides
Pretty unmistakable, with that color pattern, general shininess, and conspicuously concave rear margin of the head. This one, unusually for an ant, even has a common name, Allegheny mound ant, though it is by no means found only in the Allegheny area. It is found in most states east of and bordering the Mississippi River, and even sporadically in the Rocky Mountains.

Wonderful. It was indeed in the Allegheny Mountains taken. I saw some of their anthills - the biggest I'd ever seen, 2 meters across and more!
