Georgia Caterpillar - Acharia stimulea

Georgia Caterpillar - Acharia stimulea
Georgia, USA
September 23, 2004
I brushed my arm against this caterpillar and found it has a vicious sting.

Connecticut saddleback caterpillar
I can't find many references to saddlebacks in CT, but I've just learned that they're as nasty as nettles!

Hi, welcome to the Bug Guide
You have intersting contributions, but the images contain so much background that the subjects are much too small. Only you and the editors can see the larger version of your shots. So please: get closer, zoom in, or at least crop! I've done it here for you, hope you don't mind. This is not even cropped as much as it could be.

my field guide "Caterpillars of EAstern North America" by Wagner identifies this as Saddleback Caterpillar Acharia stimulea. In checking this on Bug Guide, here is A. stimulea at this link http://bugguide.net/node/view/138574#178661

Saddleback Caterpillar
This is the Saddleback Caterpillar, a type of slug caterpillar moth larvae, Sibine stimulea. I too have been stung by these, it is quite painful.
