Ants - Lasius

Ants - Lasius
Salem, Marion County, Oregon, USA
August 18, 2009
Size: 5 or 6mm
hundred of these tiny insect came to the lights. They look like flies or, maybe, ants.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

This is a Lasius sp.
Lasius pallitarsis is the common species of that area.

Male ants are quite waspy in appearance, hearking back to the common ancestry of ants and wasps.

Moved from ID Request.

Male ants
These are male ants that were out on a "nuptial flight" to mate

Not sure which kind these are. They kind of resemble a small Camponotus species

Male ants
not very big, are they? I was not sure wether they were ants or flies.
They show up in droves as soon as it gets warmer
Thank you for your help.
