Ichneumon Wasp - Metopiinae

Ichneumon Wasp - Metopiinae
Baiting Hollow, Suffolk County, New York, USA
August 18, 2009
I think this is a wasp. It was crawling around in a clump of grass between paving slate and would not come out in the open.
Note enlarged fore and mid leg femurs.
Taken about 3 AM.

Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

The black and yellow coloration, robust body with very stout thorax and legs, a depressed abdomen, and lack of an areolet indicate this subfamily. They are major caterpillar hunters.

See reference here.

Thanks Eric - Moved
Moved from ID Request.

One of the ichneumon wasps. Might be enough here to get to at least a subfamily at some point. I keep hoping to get to these some winter....
