Sunflower Tortoise Beetle - Physonota helianthi

Sunflower Tortoise Beetle - Physonota helianthi
Knightville Dam, Huntington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
July 20, 2009
Here is a second image from a different viewpoint.

Yes, that is the bright light of an idea shining above my head. Unfortunately, the light never shines long enough. :-)

Thanks for any ideas......BTW, this was about 500 feet from an area where there were hundreds, at least, of Dogbane Beetles. But I didn't see any in the immediate area where this image was taken. And the info page says root-feeder for Dogbane larvae, so probably of little added help.

Thanks John and Jane.
That certainly does appear to be the genus. The coloration, which I'm sure can vary, resembles the Physonota helianthi-Sunflower Tortoise, while the tail shape is more like the Physonota calochroma floridensis-Geiger. I neglected to mention that, if I recall correctly, this little guy was found on Jerusalem Artichoke so the Sunflower Tortoise seems a likely candidate.
Thanks again. :-)

Aha!
Self portrait on a larva. I have a similar one on an Eristalis fly. I am very curious to know the ID of this little beast. You have such clear photos!

Hi Beatriz
Thanks. This is a very curious little beast. Is there a shot of your Eristalis somewhere?
