aphid - Monellia caryella

aphid - Monellia caryella
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
August 21, 2009
Size: ~2mm for body
This was a surprise find. I had collected the hickory leaf in order to see what might hatch out of a gall on the leaf. Two days later when I checked the leaf, this insect showed up but not from the gall.

Great photo, Ilona
I didn't realize aphids shed exoskeletons.

Really a colorful little bug.

Reminds me of

aphid
Sure does look similar. Wonder if there is a hickory aphid since we certainly don't have pecan trees around here. Or does this aphid also appear on hickory trees?

Hickories
are trees in the genus Carya. Pecan is a species of hickory. Info here.

aphid and hickory
Thanks for the link. It never crossed my mind to think that hickory trees and pecan trees were related.
