Maybe micronympha?
I saw a moth exactly like this on Moth Photographers' Group, listed under connubialis. However, both specimens appear to me to be Catocala micronympha, form 'hero.' Tell me what you think after comparing to other hero specimens. I was quite confused with a few of the photos I took in Massanutten Resort, VA...

Catocala
You may be right, but it's tough to call. I went back and forth between the two myself. What is confusing is that both species have a similar form like this. And on this specimen in particular, the ST line is noticeably dentate and bold, indicating connubialis, as well as the lower 2/3 of the PM line (particularly near the inner margin). However, the portion of the PM line coming from the costa to the first "tooth" is clearly smooth and sweeping as in micronympha, and not dentate as in connubialis. That smooth sweep of the PM line to the first "tooth' near the costa isn't seen in connubialis, so I think you might be correct here.

i think this is a conubial underwing. Connubial Underwing - Hodges#8877 (connubialis) and its a vaiation of the standard color combo. thats what i think. orange and black underwings a beautiful moth.
