Crabro
From the shield of the tibia, this is likely C. cribellifer.

male Crabro sp.
Nice image of a male Crabro sp., family Sphecidae, subfamily Crabroninae. Males of Crabro have those bizarre "shields" on the front tibia, used to cover the eyes of the female during mating. This does not blind her, but filters light in such a way that she recognizes the male as one of her own kind. That's the theory, anyway:-)

Thanks for the genus and extra info. I had one from Alaska that had very noticable shields, but could not get close enough to the hyper active creature to get more than a fuzzy shot.
