water beetle - Belostoma

water beetle - Belostoma
Great Brook Farm State Park, Carlisle, Massachusetts, USA
August 14, 2009

Moved from Giant Water Bugs.

Not a beetle but a waterbug (Belostomatidae)
The 'X' shape on the dorsal surface and lack of wing covers (elytra) indicate that this is a true bug (Hemipteran) rather than a beetle.
This is probably Belostoma, one of the smaller 'giant water bugs'.
