Fuzzy Bug with Jaws - Ululodes

Fuzzy Bug with Jaws - Ululodes
St. Mary's County, Maryland, USA
August 25, 2009
Size: Approx. 3.75mm (0.148 in)
These insects were born from eggs that were a bit less two millimeters in length, a bit less than one millimeter in diameter and were a light grayish tan color. The eggs were laid on the stalk of a dill plant directly above another type of egg. I will attempt to add the egg image to this entry but if not able they can be viewed at http://ichbinnicht.wordpress.com/2009/08/13/eggs-of-unknown-insects/

Owl Flies
lay two types of eggs: the lower ones hatch, the larvae move up to the upper ones that are sterile but full of nutrients. The larvae eat these eggs as their first meal and usually shed their first exoscelleton right then.
