Large brown leaf-eater?? -

Size: approx. 2-3cm long
Found on a leaf of a potted plant in my front yard. Seemed to be munching on the nicotina leaves.

likely Tibicen canicularis (?)
Given locality, it is very likely this is the molt of Tibicen canicularis (The molt of the Dog-day Cicada). However, it is important to mention that there are NO good keys or available info for sorting and identifying cicada casts here in North America much beyond Genus.

cicada nymph spent shell
That's actually the empty shell from a cicada that molted into an adult from a nymph. They crawl out of the ground, climb a tree, and then emerge from their "skin" If you walk around and look at enough trees, you might find one that's about to shed, or just has. They don't eat leaves by the way :)
