European Mantis - Mantis religiosa

European Mantis - Mantis religiosa
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
September 22, 2005
Size: ~6 cm
I've spotted this species before in our yard, but not this brown. Perhaps, like dragonflies, their color changes as they reach maturity. Of course, this darker pattern matches with the dying vegetation as fall weather approaches here in New England.
