Thyme for a disguise....1 of 4 - Synchlora aerata

Thyme for a disguise....1 of 4 - Synchlora aerata
Martinsville, Henry County, Dan River Basin, Piedmont County, Virginia, USA
July 20, 2009
This caterpillar is on my thumbnail. My best guess is that this is the geometrid moth caterpillar known as the Wavy-Lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata). It has taken some of the foliage from the thyme plants in my backyard to adorn its body for camouflage. I see from reading your descriptions that this caterpillar is also called the Camouflaged Looper...very appropriate!

I've uploaded a video of this on YouTube. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDvluqQtl1E
