Tibicen sp.
I have family in those parts and have collected extensively for many years across much of Alabama; I agree with John Maxwell in this case. The common Dog-day, T. canicularis, is a more northern species and is not known to occur in Alabama. The best documented record(s) for T. canicularis in the South comes from a few isolated specimens collected in the mountains of Virginia.
Most of my personal experience in n. AL includes the following Counties: Lauderdale, Colbert, Fraklin, Limestone, Lawrence, Morgan, Madison, Marion, Cullman, Winston & Walker.
A member of the T. davisi complex (incl. T. davisi harnedi/T. auriferus) does occur across the Tennessee Valley area and the call is very similar to canicularis.
Casts are often difficult to id to species, however, T. tibicen & T. pruinosus are by far the most abundant species in the Tenn. Valley (also in your area are T. linnei, T. robinsonianus, T. lyricen, T. auletes, T. pronotalis, T. similaris, T. figuratus and T. davisi/auriferus complex).
T. tibicen molts typically have a dark area at the base of the wing pad - needless to say this one does not - so we can safely exclude T. tibicen as a likely candidate.

do you have any images of the adults? Tibicen canicularis is a northeastern species, I'm not sure if they get down there or not.
