Skimmer/Glider? - Miathyria marcella

Skimmer/Glider? - Miathyria marcella
Hilton Head, Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA
August 29, 2009
At first I thought this was a Needham's Skimmer, but after looking closely at my photos, I don't think it is. It looks more like the hyacinth glider female shown in my dragonfly book. I couldn't find it in the BugGuide. The wings were all yellow/goldish and there is a small patch of dark on the hindwings. The legs appear to be yellow/golden near the thorax and then darker below. Sorry I couldn't get a better shot of it. Help is appreicated!

The Hyacinth Glider is in the guide
here. Nice find. No images from South Caroline yet. Were there Water Hyacinths around?

Thanks!
Now I wish I had gotten clearer pictures! I went back today to look for this one again, but no luck. The area is a lagoon with lots of green "scum" in areas, weedy vegetation along the edge, and is a rookery for lots of egrets, herons, etc. I looked up water hyacinth to be sure I knew what it is, and I didn't really see any at the lagoon. Does that mean this is not a Hyacinth Glider? Thanks!
