i think this is Sphex lucae dragging the grasshopper to a burrow.

thanks Eric. yeah i couldn't believe it was dragging such a large grasshopper so quickly.

Not Sphex
Female in the genus Prionyx. Astonishing to me how they can haul a prey item that large. That's like me single-handedly carrying a sofa!

I can tell you the grasshopper is
a female Melanoplus differentialis
