Araneus saevus
This is Araneus saevus. It is widely distributed right across northern United States and Canada, from coast to coast. It is apparently quite consistent in color and pattern, being dark grey with a large, broad white slash down the front of the abdomen. It is a forest spider, usually found on trees.
