Cotinis nitida? - Cotinis nitida
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
August 30, 2009
Is this a Green June Beetle? Looks like it, from photos here, though it also sounds like this is a common insect, and yet this is the first I've ever seen. How did that happen??

I happened to spot it in my yard while I was pulling weeds.

Moved
Moved from Fruit and Flower Chafers. This is Cotinis nitida--appears to be the only widespread eastern species (see references in account for genus).

Hi Cotinis
Thanks for verifying! I figure you must know this genus pretty well. ;-)

Your ID's good, Ashley
There are several posts from Virginia, so I don't think they're scarce in your state. The closely related species that flys in Southern California is really in your face - or maybe your hair.

Thanks for the verification
The CA species is probably like our annoying masked chafers - in your face, hair, clothes...
