definitely milkweed

Leaf shape and texture matches. The plants don't get pods until later in the fall.

You can always recognize milkweed by the thick white sap that appears whenever a leaf is removed or the stem broken. It's sticky but not irritating unless you have very sensitive skin, and washes off easily.

your probably correct about this. I'll check next time back. I did see other milkweeds already with pods in another area of the prairie. Main thing is the bugs are id'ed

Looks like to me. I think that leaf is milkweed too?
