This looks like a fourth instar caterpillar I found in a sassafras patch.

what a great subject. I would love to find one of those in my garden.

I went looking for these caterpillars today, and had great success in a dense sassafras patch. They also like spicebush, and they hide by folding a leaf over themselves. Good luck finding one.
