Olive-green Swamp Grasshopper - Paroxya clavuliger - male - female

Olive-green Swamp Grasshopper - Paroxya clavuliger - Male Female
Horton's Pond, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA
September 23, 2005
Size: 35 mm
The coupled pair. The male seemed quite helpless, dangling behind the female. Capinera (1) states that the contorted mating posture in Acrididae is a remnant of the original (more primitive) mating system of orthoptera, where the female mounts the male. This system is used by most crickets and katydids.
