When a annoyed it did a headstand sort of thing. Hard shell in the back end.

Coccinellidae pupal defenses
These pupae can "bite" as you have observed when you touched it. That way they don't need to camouflage themselves. One can just brush them lightly with a hair and see what happens, poor ants legs... I read about this in Eisner's book For Love of Insects.
The back end is the larva's skin.

 
They bite?
I'm not surprised. It didn't bite me but the some of the adults of this species have in the past.

And they didn't need much provocation for it either-just walking in the grass.
