CHINESE MANTID - Tenodera sinensis - female

CHINESE MANTID - Tenodera sinensis - Female
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA
September 5, 2009
Size: ~ 2½" - 2¾"
Came upon it in the morning while putting yard debris in an old, galvanized trash can with lid . As I was closing the lid, a light brown vertical "something" caught my eye: just a couple of inches in back of the trash can. It was in a thick stand of ferns which meet with a thick stand of tansy next to my driveway. We met eye-to-eye and I quickly got my camera. I've been looking for a "Praying Mantis" to photograph since I got my first digital camera in 2001! From looking in field guides, I think this is a Chinese Mantid as it has tan fore wings with green along the front margins. I've included two not-so-good photos of the abdomen, the second tries to show the end of it. As the mantid was lower to the ground and moving amongst the ferns, I was not able to get a clear shot of the underside. I've submitted 6 photos: 2 showing Mantid overall, 2 trying to show abdomen & underside, 2 close-ups of its head. Hope it's not too much: it's been a long wait for me to photo a mantid!
