Vine Sphinx Moth - Eumorpha vitis

Vine Sphinx Moth - Eumorpha vitis
San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, USA
July 22, 2009
Saw this on the side of my sister's stucco house in July. During a very hot dry spell (not unusual for West Texas). Looked it up on the internet and think it's a Vine Sphynx but learned there is another species very similar so wanted verification.

Moved from ID Request.

I would agree with you...
...Vine Sphinx (Eumorpha vitis).

If you will look at the Information page on this species and scroll down to the See Also section, you will find links to the other species that can be confused with these.

Confusion with Banded
Thank you for the site reference. The one I was confusing it with was the Banded Sphinx. I have a good butterfly guide, but not one for moths. Need to add that to my Christmas list.
