 Scarab - Strategus antaeus

Scarab - Strategus antaeus
Juno Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
August 15, 2009
Size: 1"
Large Scarab Beetle . . . wind blew it into the pool . . . mid-morning, I was surprised to find it abroad at that time of day. Dipped it out. Very robust. 1" or more in length. Strategus splendens? Possibly small "horn", or maybe a female? As it dried off, the antennae rose from their droopy position either side of the head. Released it into the grass. My first live Scarab, actually, saw so many depictions of them in Egypt. They really DO have those heavy front legs!!
