I quite can't make it out, but is there hair on the eyes?
If so, I'd say E. tenax. Info here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/7183

(I've gotten a bit smarter in the last month or so! LOL!)

Eristalis tenax?
To me this looks identical to E. tenax, and not identical to any others we have in the guide (but of course, we don't have all the species). Are there other species this might be?

 
I'm hesitant to ID E. tenax
I think we have many iffy and bad IDs in this category, unless there's a huge amount of variation in the species. Many of our IDs are tentative or from non-experts. Here's a tentatively IDed post that looks like the one here. Are these E. tenax or not? I can't say definitively.


OTOH, here's one IDed by an expert. Perhaps Gerard will comment here, too.
