Looks like an Eumorpha

Its about to pupate, so you might want to give it soil to bury itself in. They're very pretty moths.

 
Eumorpha
This would probably be Eumorpha achemon, the only other species in the genus found in CA is E. fasciatus, but it is considered a stray.

 
Good to know!
I've collected Eumorpha achemon here and didn't know that. Thought it was either E. achemon or E. pandorus until it emerged as an adult.
