Braconidae ? - Theronia hilaris

Braconidae ? - Theronia hilaris
Jim Thorpe, PA 18229, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 27, 2005
Size: 1 inch approx.
Guessing the sex of this one. Female? This is only clear photo of it-I have other photos from different angles-but they aren't very good-good enough to see the colours and body shape. another very busy wasp. It was also kind enough to run about ON the camera.

Should add one of the other photos?

Thanks

Jo

Thank-you so much for the IDs
Thank-you so much for the IDs on my OLD photos! I can finally give them names!

No, Ichneumonidae
Because the wing is clearly visible, it shows a certain vein that is only present in ichneumonidae, not in Braconidae.
However, more information concerning species ID is almost impossible from a picture.

Whoah!
I'd have said Braconidae also. Can you somehow point out the vein you are talking about. Maybe submit a diagram comparing the two families with that character? Would really be helpful. Thanks.

Differences Ichneumonidae-Braconidae
Hello eric,
Well, it is a very difficult issue, because it is not always very clear! Maybe the best thing I can do is show you all a link to a site on the net were there is an explanation with picture of the difference in wing venation from the two.
The link is:
http://hymenoptera.tamu.edu/paroffit/?taxcpl=cpl&taxcpl_id=2
Those are the veins i am talking about, and in the picture we talk about one can see this vein B very well, although it is a bit difficult . Hope this is enough for now?
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Thank you- ^_^ I'm never
