Caterpillar found crawling in picnic area on hill above Jackson Bog. Most people think it's a Sphinx Moth caterpillar but don't know what kind.

with ryan, i was trying to puzzle this out myself.

Paonis spp.
Either Paonis excaecatus or P. myops. My guess would be P. myops because of the backward pointing horn of this individual which is more characteristic of this species than P. excaecatus.

if the "spikes" look like this picture where they are more prominent, this might be a match: maduca rustica(rustic sphinx)?
