Big red ant - Dasymutilla asopus

Big red ant - Dasymutilla asopus
Trinity River Audubon Center, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, USA
August 29, 2009
Size: .5" long
This little guy was running along quickly and would not hold still for a picture.

Moved
Moved from Dasymutilla.

Dasymutilla asopus
This specimen is D. asopus. Because of the angle, the thorax looks more elongate than other D. asopus specimens. If measured from the top of the propodeum, however, the thorax is equally as broad as it is long, separating this species from D. nigripes, D. creon, or D. vesta.

Dasymutilla sp.
Moved from ID Request.

How about
Mutillidae (Velvet Ants) a type of wasp
