Brown butterfly - Asterocampa celtis - male

Brown butterfly - Asterocampa celtis - Male
Isle du Bois park, Pilot Point, Denton County, Texas, USA
September 5, 2009
Size: 1.5"
This cutie came, fluttered around me on the trail and then lit on my arm, lapping up my sweat. Finally it flew onto my hat and rode along for about 15 mins. before it flew away. It was a great camera subject, and I got good pics of both sides of the wings. I am submitting both pictures. This is the underside, with beautiful spots.

Moved
Moved from Hackberry Emperor.

Thought I'd add that it's a male
Nice pictures. It's often not the easiest species to photograph - kind'a jumpy.

Hackberry Emperor
The presence of eyespots on the forewing (the wing that's pointing upward in this image) is one way to distinguish this species from the similar Tawny Emperor. The "cell bars" are different also. A field guide or google search on the species can probably help with that. And you're right, it is a cutie!

Whenever you're satisfied with an ID and don't have additional questions about the image, feel free to go ahead and move it to frass or the guide. You and the official editors are the only ones who can do so.
