Horned Passalus--freshly emerged - Odontotaenius disjunctus

Horned Passalus--freshly emerged - Odontotaenius disjunctus

Apparently, this is a freshly-emerged specimen (teneral). It was found among the more typical darker adults. It was chilled, posed, and returned to its original home.

Compare with the typical, dark brown/black specimen:

Very cool
A very cool beetle! Wonder if they are always red soon after emerging, or if yours is an unusual case?

Yes
I've seen many that are much lighter than this one. It probably takes them awhile to darken.
