Rustic sphinx (detail) - Manduca rustica

Rustic sphinx (detail) - Manduca rustica
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
September 30, 2005
Size: 80mm
J & J noticed the black dots on my first posting of this hornworm. On close inspection, I think they are empty silky pupae of some kind of parasite. This was the best detail I could get with my camera. Spiracle at top right, two adjacent empty pupae at bottom center.

crochets!
Excellent--shows the crochets on that proleg--now used in the glossary entry. (Also used for spiracles.)
