Orb Weaving Spider - Neoscona crucifera

Orb Weaving Spider - Neoscona crucifera
Saint Louis County, Missouri, USA
August 23, 2006
This spider wove a large beautiful web everynight over part of our patio door near the light. It wove the web so that we could open the sliding door and it barely touched the web. I first saw it Aug 23 and it stayed here until cold weather.

Just to let you know, without seeing the ventral view, I'm not sure if I could have told this apart from Eriophora ravilla.

Moved from ID Request.

Orb weaver
It is certainly an orb weaver, and not dangerous. If possible a shot of the other side will help with ID.

Orb weaver
I have added the best image of the underside of this spider that I could find. Hope this helps. We have found most spiders we run across to be very shy and unthreatening.

Thank you.
With that added view I'd say my best guess is Neoscona crucifera. You can see more of them here.
