They seemed to be breathing thru the base of the tail which was kept at the surface. Anyone know what they are? Just curious.

They were just over an inch long. No way I was going to pick it up. There were about 40 of them in a 6'x6' puddle. A soldier fly or tabanid eh? Cool, Thanks for the info.
