Goldenrod elliptical galls - Gnorimoschema gallaesolidaginis

Goldenrod elliptical galls - Gnorimoschema gallaesolidaginis
Horsham trail. Horsham, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
March 10, 2009
I hope that we can replace this image when we have better ones. Meantime, I am confident that the three galls on the left belong to this species, I am not sure about the other two.
Number three shows the "bung", the plug made by the larva before pupating. The larva digs a tunnel and stops very close to the surface, then plugs it with debris that the adult will be able to remove when ready to leave. It should have left in the fall, so presumably it died inside.

More on goldenrod galls fauna.
