Moth caterpillar possibly like Acontia - Tarache aprica Hampton County, Virginia, USA September 15, 2009 Size: about 3 cm
This caterpillar, and a similar looking one, were found on Kosteletzkya virginica, Seashore mallow, around 8:45 in the morning in a suburban backyard adjacent to saltmarsh. I'm having a rough time going through all the caterpillars in BugGuide. I think it is shaped very similarly to Acontia aprica, which seems like a good lead because that is listed as liking Hollyhocks, which are also mallows, but the color pattern doesn't seem very close. Is it possible for anyone to make an educated guess based on this image? I'm sorry the tail-end is not in focus; it was poor light in a wooded area and my macro skills aren't the best. And I couldn't spend the time to get any other angles because I was late for work! Thanks for any help!
